Is Feeding Therapy Right for My Child?

If you’re here, you’re noticing something about your child’s eating and want clarity on what to do next. You’re taking a positive first step. This page walks you through how to get started with pediatric feeding therapy, what to expect in the first visit, and how to schedule an evaluation. Borza Feeding Therapy provides in‑home feeding evaluations for families across Pittsburgh and the North Hills.

Check out our Feeding Therapy FAQ for answers to commonly asked questions.

What Happens in a Feeding Evaluation

Your child’s first visit focuses on understanding how they eat in their everyday environment. The goal is to get an accurate picture of their routines, preferences, and current skills so recommendations are meaningful and individualized. This visit is designed to feel natural and comfortable for your child — no pressure, no surprises.
During this visit, we will:
  • Observe a familiar mealtime or snack
  • Talk through your child’s feeding history and current challenges
  • Look at how your child participates in mealtime routines
  • Identify immediate next steps and recommendations

How to Get Started

You can begin with a 15‑minute discovery call to determine whether an evaluation is appropriate. No referral is required. After the call, you’ll receive:
  • A confirmation email
  • A brief intake questionnaire
  • A proposed evaluation time

How to Prepare for Your Feeding Evaluation

To help the visit run smoothly, please have:
  • A few familiar foods
  • Your child’s usual seating
  • Any cups, bottles, or utensils they typically use
  • Any relevant medical or developmental information

After the Evaluation

You’ll receive:
  • A clear explanation of your child’s feeding strengths and needs
  • Recommendations for next steps
  • A plan for therapy, if appropriate
  • Simple strategies you can begin using right away
If additional referrals are recommended (GI, nutrition, OT, PT), these will be discussed with you.

What Feeding Therapy Looks Like

If therapy is recommended, sessions take place in your home (or at daycare/school when appropriate). Therapy focuses on building skills and is always individualized to your child’s needs. You’ll learn how to support progress between sessions with small, manageable steps that fit into your daily routines.
